Kwikset keying

Kwikset's key management primarily involves two technologies: one is the "Keyed Alike" function based on traditional mechanical lock cylinders, and the other is its signature SmartKey intelligent re-keying technology. Additionally, its smart locks support the management of master user codes and standard user codes. The table below helps you quickly understand the core concepts and methods.

Keyed Alike

Configures multiple different locks to be opened by the same key.

All Kwikset pin tumbler locks.

All locks to be matched, one target key; can be done by purchasing a kit or by a locksmith.

SmartKey Re-keying

Quickly changes the internal coding of the lock cylinder to match a new key without disassembling the lock body.

Locks with SmartKey technology (a small hole next to the keyhole).

Current key, new key, SmartKey tool.

Master User Code

The "administrator password" for the smart lock, used to manage all other user codes and lock settings.

Kwikset smart locks (e.g., SmartCode series).

The default master code is often 0000; be sure to change it upon initial setup.

💡 Operation Guide and Important Notes

Confirm Your Lock Type

Before any operation, first confirm if your Kwikset lock supports the aforementioned functions.

  • SmartKey Technology: Check the side of the key cylinder (usually below or to the side of the keyhole) for a small, oval hole. This is the mark of SmartKey technology.

  • Traditional Pin Tumbler Lock: If there is no such small hole, then your lock has a traditional pin tumbler structure.

Re-keying Using SmartKey Technology

This is Kwikset's most distinctive feature, allowing you to re-key the lock yourself in seconds.

  1. Preparation: Ensure the door is open, then extend the deadbolt (i.e., put it in the "locked" position). Have the current key that works with the lock and the new key you want to use ready.

  2. Enter Learning Mode: Insert the current key into the cylinder and turn it clockwise 90 degrees (to a horizontal position).

  3. Reset the Lock Cylinder: Fully and firmly insert the SmartKey tool (a small L-shaped metal rod) into the small hole next to the key cylinder until you feel or hear a faint click. Then, remove the SmartKey tool and pull out the current key.

  4. Set the New Key: Immediately insert the new key fully into the cylinder. Turn it counterclockwise 180 degrees, then turn it back clockwise 90 degrees to the original vertical position. The new key should now pull out smoothly.

  5. Testing: Use the new key to lock and unlock the door several times to ensure it works properly. The old key will no longer open the lock.

Important Safety Tips

  • Keep the SmartKey Tool Secure: This tool should be stored separately from the keys. If obtained by others, it could pose a security risk.

  • Keep the Door Open During Operation: Prevents accidentally locking yourself out during testing.

  • Change Default Codes: For smart locks, it is essential to change the default master user code (often 0000) and user codes upon initial setup. This is the most important first step for home security.

💎 How to Choose?

  • If you only want to use one key for several locks in your home and they are all relatively new Kwikset locks, selecting the "Keyed Alike" option at purchase or having a locksmith configure it is the most convenient.

  • If you need to re-key because you lost a key, a lease ended, or you want to periodically enhance security, using the SmartKey feature to re-key yourself is the most economical and fastest choice.

  • If you need to provide temporary access for a nanny, tenant, or contractor, the temporary user code function of smart locks best meets this need.
